Technical Support for Proposal to Improve Adolescent Reproductive Health, Nutrition and Empowerment in Ethiopia
CARE
2015

Together with their country partner, Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (ACIPH), CARE USA received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to implement a five-year proposal entitled: Improving Adolescent Reproductive Health and Nutrition in Ethiopia through Structural Solutions. The goals of this project include: reducing gender inequality in school attendance and completion rates; reducing malnutrition among adolescent girls; reducing early and forced marriage; increasing use of modern family planning; and increasing age at first birth. To accomplish these goals, the program uses evidence based practices to target three major structural determinants of health that hinder girls’ empowerment, namely: government institutions; social norms and values, and individual agency. In the preparation for proposal submission, Iris Group provided technical assistance in Ethiopia, helping to design and integrate gender in the program’s monitoring and evaluation plan.
